What I Learned About Education in Mainland China: Insights That Shaped The Shan Academy’s Approach

During my time in Mainland China, I had the privilege of working with dedicated students who showed incredible resilience, grit, and work ethic. The education system there is rigorous and disciplined, which gave me invaluable insight into the mindset of Chinese students. However, it also highlighted the pressure they face, especially when it comes to their mental health and well-being.

The schedules are demanding. Students have rigid timetables and study long hours, often going to bed late and waking up early to push through the intense workload. Their focus is unwavering, as they are fixated on long-term goals, with a belief that studying relentlessly is the path to success. The expectations placed on them are high, and there is little room for deviation. This relentless drive for academic achievement is admirable, but it often comes at a cost. Anxiety, stress, and sometimes depression were common among the students I encountered. It was tough to witness, as many of them suffered from low sleep and had little time for self-care.

One of the things I truly admired, however, was the discipline. There is an immense respect for teachers and education in China, and students follow the rules with little complaint. They understand the importance of their education and are determined to succeed. It was inspiring to see their commitment to pushing through, no matter how difficult the road was. For many students, studying abroad is a dream — one they will do anything to achieve.

Despite this drive, I noticed the stark contrast in how students with special educational needs (SEN) were treated. There seemed to be little differentiation in teaching methods for these students. Mental health and learning difficulties were approached in a more rigid manner, and there wasn't as much focus on creating an inclusive, supportive environment for them.

The system is highly focused on results — tests, continuous rankings, and numerical outcomes dominate the education landscape. While this emphasis on achievement fosters a strong work ethic and discipline, it also reinforces a sense of pressure and competition among students. The focus on results often leaves little room for creativity, emotional development, or individual needs.

Incorporating These Lessons at The Shan Academy

When I founded The Shan Academy, I wanted to take the best lessons from my experience in China and apply them in a way that supports the well-being of our students. I admire the resilience, dedication, and discipline that Chinese students bring to their education, and I have worked to integrate these values into our approach. However, I also recognized the importance of balance — of maintaining mental health, well-being, and emotional support, especially when students transition to a new culture and education system.

At The Shan Academy, we take a holistic approach to education, combining the determination and focus seen in Chinese students with a deep respect for individual needs and well-being. We emphasize the importance of building confidence, mental resilience, and long-term growth, rather than just focusing on results.

For Chinese students moving to the UK, we understand the cultural shift they experience. While their work ethic is a tremendous asset, they often find themselves struggling with the more independent and student-centered style of learning in the UK. We provide tailored support that helps them transition smoothly, focusing not just on academics but also on developing life skills, confidence, and emotional well-being.

We work to foster a safe, inclusive environment for all students, especially those with special educational needs, where they can thrive without the pressure of constant rankings or comparisons. Our approach incorporates both academic rigor and emotional support to ensure students are prepared for exams and equipped for life beyond them.

Incorporating what I learned about dedication, discipline, and respect for education into The Shan Academy’s methodology has allowed us to create a space where Chinese students can thrive in a new educational system while maintaining their strong work ethic and drive for success. By supporting their mental health and personal growth, we help them achieve not only academic excellence but also a sense of balance and well-being that will serve them for years to come.
