The Story Behind The Shan Academy

Bridging Two Worlds

In recent years, many families from China and Hong Kong have moved to the UK, facing the challenge of adapting to a completely different education system. The Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese systems are highly target-driven, focused on results, memorisation, and discipline. In contrast, the UK system emphasises critical thinking, personal development, and independence. This shift can be overwhelming for students and parents alike.

Our Founder and Director, Shannon Dhillon (also known as Shan 山 ) saw this firsthand. Many of her tutoring students from China and Hong Kong struggled to adjust - not because they lacked ability, but because they were used to a completely different style of learning and structure. They also faced cultural barriers, social pressures and challenges adapting to an unfamiliar country.

Determined to help them bridge this gap, she created The Shan Academy - a place where students receive not just academic support, but the confidence and life skills to thrive in their new environment.

Mountain Peak

Climbing The Mountain (山)

The name Shan 山 means mountain in Chinese - a fitting metaphor for the journey students face when adjusting to a new culture and education system. Climbing a mountain requires resilience, perseverance, and the right guidance. That’s exactly what The Shan Academy provides.

Success isn’t just about reaching the peak - it’s about learning how to navigate the challenges along the way. The Shan Academy offers tailored, long-term support that helps students grow academically and personally. From preparing for exams to mastering British culture, public speaking, and career planning, the focus is on building confidence and life skills that last far beyond the classroom.

From Twickenham, to China to Hong Kong

Shan’s deep understanding of this transition comes from firsthand experience. After working with many Chinese and Hong Kong students in London, she knew that to truly help them, she needed to immerse herself in their culture, so she booked a flight, lived and taught in China and Hong Kong for 7 months.

This experience shaped The Shan Academy’s unique approach. Shan saw the pressures and expectations students face in China and Hong Kong and combined this knowledge with her understanding of the British system to create a program that addresses both academic success and emotional well-being.

What began as a small tutoring service for a few families in Twickenham, South West London, has now grown to support students across the UK, Hong Kong, and China.

Our Holistic Approach

What sets The Shan Academy apart is its holistic, long-term approach. It’s not just about academics - it’s about preparing students for life. We understand the nuances of both education systems and the pressures that come with them.

Students gain more than just subject knowledge - they build confidence, adaptability, and critical thinking. From CV building and career planning to public speaking and financial literacy, the programme equips them with life skills that set them up for long-term success.

Parents are supported too. The Shan Academy works closely with families, explaining the British system and helping parents navigate school choices and educational planning with confidence.
